Friends of the Arboretum
The Arboretum is a special 7-acres in the heart of New Hanover County where homeowners can see the variety of plants that grow in our coastal area as well as emerging trends in plant material. Cooperative Extension’s “horticulture laboratory”, the Arboretum has a very knowledgeable staff and many volunteers working to make the gardens beautiful and educational. Come out and discover what makes us so extraordinary!
New Hanover County Center gives our county’s residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A & T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension Agents deliver unbiased, research-based information to New Hanover County citizens.
Wilmington Railroad Museum
The mission of the museum is to provide an educational and enjoyable experience
concerning the history, technology, and impact of the rail industry with emphasis on the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.
Looking for something new and exciting to do with your children?
How about a visit to the Wilmington Railroad Museum? The Wilmington Railroad Museum has a great collection of displays that are fun and educational.
On the fun side are a Thomas the Tank Train play area, more than 20 operating scale model trains, spectacular model layouts, and a real life-size caboose, boxcar, and 100-year-old steam locomotive.
Educationally, we trace the development of railroads in the Wilmington area as well as the careers of famous people who were involved with railroads, such as Thomas Edison and George Pullman.
W.A.R.M.
WARM unites people of compassion to rebuild homes and restore hope for our low-income neighbors, many of whom are elderly or disabled, and enables them to live safely and independently in their own homes and communities.
WARM works with individuals, organizations, and businesses in Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender Counties in Southeastern North Carolina.
Every year, WARM, Inc. organizes over 500 local and out-of-town volunteers to complete vital repairs for an average of 60 low income homeowners, whose income falls 50% below the median for their county. In many cases, we help the residents stay in their homes. The average cost of repairs is $3,500-$4,000 per home. Over 80% of our homeowners are elderly widows and over 30% are disabled.
WARM, Inc. provides meaningful work that changes lives in a setting that encourages group unity, spiritual enrichment, and a sense of satisfaction that comes only from helping others.
